How to compare fitted wardrobe proposals

If you are considering Hammonds, Sharps and The Heritage Wardrobe Company, compare the designs and written specifications offered for your room. Terms such as “bespoke” and “made to measure” do not, on their own, explain how the furniture will be constructed or fitted.

This guide is written by The Heritage Wardrobe Company. It sets out the questions to ask each supplier and describes our own approach.

1. Design and construction

Ask how the design accommodates alcoves, chimney breasts, sloping ceilings and uneven walls. Request drawings showing the dimensions, door proportions and internal storage, and clarify which parts are made for the room and which are adjusted during fitting.

At Heritage, we design fitted wardrobes and dressing rooms around the space. Our in-house team makes, installs and finishes the furniture to the agreed design.

2. Layout and storage options

Compare the proposed balance of long and short hanging space, shelves and drawers. Check that doors and drawers have room to open and that frequently used items are within reach.

Our options include integrated lighting, shoe and accessory storage, dressing tables and central islands where space allows. The layout, door style, colour and internal finish are agreed during design.

3. Installation, aftercare and guarantees

Ask who measures, manufactures, installs and finishes the furniture, who your point of contact will be, and what preparation is required before fitting. Confirm the installation schedule, payment stages and arrangements for resolving any outstanding work.

Heritage installations come with a lifetime guarantee; contact our team for the written terms. At the time of this review, Sharps advertises a 15-year product and installation guarantee, while Hammonds describes a 10-year guarantee covering workmanship and materials. The duration alone is not a like-for-like comparison: check each supplier’s current coverage, exclusions and claims process before ordering.

4. Materials and finishes

Request samples and a written specification for the doors, cabinet interiors, edging, hinges, drawer fittings and paint finish. Distinguish solid timber, veneers and decorative board finishes, and ask which materials are proposed for each part of your furniture.

Our project pages show examples of the finishes and storage arrangements we have used. The specification for your own furniture should be confirmed in your proposal.

Compare the complete quotation

Review the design, materials, accessories, fitting, finishing and aftercare together. Check what is included in each price and whether any preparation or electrical work needs to be arranged separately.
