How to create a beautiful country style bedroom with bespoke fitted furniture
Country style bedrooms have remained popular for generations. They offer something many modern interiors struggle to achieve: Warmth, character and a sense of permanence.
Whether you’re lucky enough to own a period county cottage in Kent, a Georgian farmhouse in Surrey or a Victorian townhouse in London; often the most successful country-inspired bedrooms feel as though they have evolved naturally alongside the home itself.
Over the past 20+ years, we’ve designed and installed bespoke fitted wardrobes, dressing rooms, walk-in wardrobes and matching bedroom furniture in hundreds of charmingly characterful properties across London and the South East.
While every project is different (and always completely bespoke), there is one challenge we encounter time and time again.
Homeowners love the charm of their period properties, but they often struggle with the practical realities of a house built hundreds of years ago. Uneven walls, wobbly chimney breasts, invasive sloping ceilings, awkward alcoves and generally a lack of storage rarely work well with off-the-shelf or modular furniture.
A good example is a project we carried-out for a client in Tunbridge Wells. They had spent years trying to make matching freestanding wardrobes work either side of an original fireplace. Despite replacing the furniture twice, the room still felt cluttered and inconsistent. By creating fitted wardrobes tailored to the exact dimensions of each alcove, we transformed the room into a space that looked and felt as though it had always been designed that way.
That’s often the difference between furniture that simply occupies a room and furniture that belongs in it.
What defines country style bedroom furniture?
Country style is often mistaken for rustic furniture and distressed finishes. But the best country interiors are built around traditional styling, premium craftsmanship and thoughtful design from the outset.
Common country style bedroom furniture often includes:
- Panelled wardrobe doors
- Traditional mouldings and cornicing
- Heritage-inspired paint colours
- Natural wood textures
- Classic hardware and ironmongery
- Furniture that feels architectural rather than temporary
The aim isn’t to fill a room with furniture. It’s to create a bedroom that feels established, elegant and practical.
Many of our clients come to us after becoming frustrated with furniture that almost works. Freestanding wardrobes that leave huge unusable space above them. Chests of drawers that don’t align with alcoves. Storage that fails to make maximum use of the available space.
A country-style bedroom should feel cohesive. Every element should work together and complement your home’s existing character, architecture and style.
What makes bespoke built-in wardrobes work so well in country homes?
Some of our most rewarding projects have been in older properties where conventional furniture simply wasn’t an option.
In a Berkshire home dating back more than a century, we recently designed built-in fitted wardrobes around original exposed oak beams and a sloping ceiling that made freestanding furniture impractical. Rather than concealing these features, the design celebrated them.
The finished wardrobes looked as though they had been built alongside the house itself.
This is where bespoke fitted wardrobes excel. They can:
- Maximise awkward alcoves
- Frame fireplaces beautifully
- Work around beams and period features
- Utilise eaves and sloping ceilings
- Eliminate wasted space
- Provide floor-to-ceiling storage
Behind their traditional appearance, fitted wardrobes can also incorporate all the practical features modern homeowners expect, including integrated LED lighting, soft-close mechanisms, bespoke shoe storage, pull-out rails, shoe racks, handbag shelving and jewellery drawers.
Country style should never mean compromising on functionality.
Examples of our country-style wardrobe projects that inspire
Over the years, at The Heritage Wardrobe Company we’ve created 1000’s of custom made bespoke fitted wardrobes and dressing rooms in a huge variety of country-style homes.
A bedroom extension transformation in Essex
One particularly memorable project involved transforming a bedroom extension in Essex into a spacious dressing room. The clients wanted something elegant and timeless rather than overtly contemporary.
By combining elements from our Empire and Imperial collections, finished in a soft heritage white with light walnut interiors, we created a room that felt refined, welcoming and completely in keeping with the character of the countryside property.
Custom-made dressing room in Surrey
In Surrey, we completed a dressing room featuring glass-fronted wardrobes, soft internal lighting and a central island. Although highly functional, the overall impression was one of understated luxury rather than overt display.
Edwardian grandeur for a county home in Ascot
Meanwhile, a project in Ascot combined Edwardian and Tudor styling to create a dressing room that felt as though it belonged within the property’s original architecture. Four-panel wardrobes, a built-in dressing table and a substantial central island delivered both elegance and practicality.
Every one of these projects started with the same question:
“How can we make this room work better while preserving its character?“
Our most popular wardrobe design styles for country homes
The Edwardian Collection – made for period homes
Of all our wardrobe collections, the Edwardian range is perhaps the most naturally suited to country-style interiors.
Defined by its classic four-panel doors and balanced proportions, it works beautifully alongside original fireplaces, sash windows and decorative cornicing.
As a recent customer commented:
“The wardrobes and shelves work perfectly in our early 19th century house. The quality is excellent and we wouldn’t hesitate to use the company again.”
Comments like these are particularly rewarding because they reflect exactly what we’re trying to achieve. Furniture that feels entirely at home within the architecture of the property rather than competing with it.
Often painted in pastel whites, stone colours or soft greens, Edwardian wardrobes remain one of the most popular choices for homeowners seeking timeless country elegance.
The Tudor Collection – Bold, characterful and architectural
For homes with exposed beams, textured walls and period architectural features, the Tudor Collection is a popular choice.
Its stronger framing details and heavier appearance helps anchor larger rooms and create a sense of permanence.
One of our favourite Tudor projects was completed in Berkshire for a client looking to create a more masculine dressing room. Finished in a striking charcoal shade with walnut interiors, the wardrobes complemented the period features of the home perfectly.
The result felt less like fitted furniture and more like traditional joinery that had always been part of the room.
As one customer told us:
“The craftsmanship and quality are second to none and without hesitation I would highly recommend The Heritage Wardrobe Company if you have a period property.”
The Imperial Collection – Understated luxury
The Imperial Collection has become particularly popular with homeowners renovating larger country homes, where a little extra presence is required.
Inspired by traditional British architectural detailing, our Imperial style wardrobes bring an abundance of elegance without feeling ostentatious.
This is often what clients are looking for. Luxury and elegance that feels traditional rather than showy.
Painted in soft creams, muted greys or heritage greens, Imperial wardrobes suit both classic country homes and more contemporary country living.
The Empire Collection – Decorative without being fussy
The Empire Collection is often chosen by homeowners looking for something slightly more distinctive. Its elegant fretwork detailing creates visual interest while remaining sympathetic to traditional interiors.
A great example of this can be seen in a recent project we completed in a period cottage in Ascot, combining Empire-style mirrored wardrobes with a bespoke dressing table and coordinated storage throughout the room. The mirrors helped maximise natural light while the decorative detailing added character and individuality.
Our Empire collection works particularly well when clients want traditional styling with a little more personality. Something the Empire collection had in spades.
The Jubilee Collection – Elegant and welcoming
Some country-style bedrooms benefit from softer detailing and lighter visual weight. The Jubilee Collection was designed with this in mind.
In this example in Tunbridge Wells, we used the Jubilee style finished in a rich green heritage paint colour. Combined with walnut interiors and carefully integrated lighting, the result felt warm, welcoming and wonderfully personal.
Rather than following trends, the Jubilee collection design reflected the owners’ tastes and the character of the property.
That is usually where the best rooms come from.
The best colours for a country-style bedroom
Colour can completely transform the feel of fitted furniture.
While every project is different, certain colours consistently work well in country-inspired interiors.
Popular choices include warm ivory, soft white, sage green, duck egg blue, stone and mushroom tones, deep navy, forest green and charcoal grey.
One trend we’ve seen grow in popularity over the past few years is the use of darker heritage colours. A decade ago, most clients favoured creams and whites. Today, deep greens, blues and charcoal shades are increasingly popular, particularly when paired with natural oak or walnut interiors.
The result feels rich, sophisticated and wonderfully timeless.
Built-in dressing tables and matching bedroom furniture
On the larger side, country bedrooms rarely feel complete with wardrobes alone. Many homeowners choose to incorporate matching furniture such as built-in dressing tables, bedside cabinets, islands, window seats, dressing tables, bookcases, display shelving, media units and chests of drawers.
By designing everything together, the room feels cohesive and purposeful.
One project in Buckinghamshire featured a bespoke dressing room with a central island, dressing table and open shelving throughout. The owner described it as feeling more like a luxury boutique than a storage space.
That level of personalisation simply isn’t possible with off-the-shelf furniture.
Luxury on the next level: Walk-in wardrobes and Dressing Rooms for country homes
Where space allows, a walk-in wardrobe or dressing room can transform daily life.
Some of our most enjoyable projects have involved transforming spare bedrooms, loft conversion and bedroom extensions into amazing dressing areas.
A recent project in an Islington townhouse featured a striking walk-in dressing room finished in a rich teal colour with illuminated shelving and a bespoke island at its centre.
Another in Kensington incorporated separate storage zones for handbags, shoes, tailoring and accessories, ensuring every item had its own place and was always to hand when needed.
The beauty of a bespoke walk-in wardrobe is that it is designed entirely around the homeowner’s space and lifestyle.
Not a catalogue. Not a standard template. No collection of modules forced into a space.
Everything is created specifically for the room and the people who use it.
Why a quality bespoke wardrobes is worth the investment
We often meet frustrated homeowners who have replaced freestanding furniture multiple times over the years. What initially appeared to be a saving often became an expensive cycle of compromise.
A bespoke fitted wardrobe is different because it is:
- Designed specifically for your home, décor and architecture
- Built around your space and storage requirements
- Handcrafted in-house by our skilled craftsmen (and women!)
- Professionally installed
- Finished to the highest standards
- Guaranteed for life
As a clients commented on one of our 100+ Google customer reviews:
